About
Type Koyomi is a koyomi, the traditional Japanese calendar, with every day set in its own Japanese typeface. Each page shows the date with the moon, the season, the day's fortune, and any holiday, as the old almanacs did.
Features
- Calendar: See Japanese holidays, lunar dates, moon phases, the 24 solar terms, the 72 seasonal divisions, and rokuyo, the traditional six-day fortune cycle. Calendar pages remain in Japanese in every app language.
- Typefaces: Discover Japanese typefaces, from Mincho and Gothic to brush and dot styles. Every day keeps its typeface, so a page you revisit looks as it did before.
- Random Day: Tap the die, or double-tap the page, to flip to a random day. Tap Today to come back. Swipe up to turn back through earlier days.
- About This Typeface: Tap あ to explore each typeface in detail, including its class, designer, license, and specimen.
- Bookmarks: Some typefaces just speak to you. Tap the bookmark on any day you want to keep, and build a collection of your favorites.
- Widgets: Japanese typefaces and today's calendar, on your Home Screen. Choose larger widgets for more calendar details, or keep the date and moon on your Lock Screen.
- Paper: Choose Gold Dust, Washi, or Straw, in light or dark. Saturdays appear in indigo, Sundays and Japanese national holidays in vermilion.
- Share: Share any day as an image, or save it to Photos.
- Daily Reminder: A notification at the time you choose names today's typeface.
How It's Made
The almanac comes from NASA JPL's DE440s ephemeris for the moon and the solar terms, and from the national holidays published by Japan's Cabinet Office. Every ink keeps a contrast of at least 4.5:1 on every paper. Every typeface is open source and credited to its designers.
Accessibility
VoiceOver reads each page as one description, from the date to the day's fortune. Text scales with Dynamic Type, and motion follows Reduce Motion.
Screenshots
Full-size iPhone and iPad screenshots, in English and Japanese, are in the press kit.
